Recently, I encountered someone who was particularly enthusiastic about their birthday falling on or around the Winter Solstice. This sparked my curiosity, prompting me to delve into the topic through a Google Search. (I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of it being an encyclopedia search in the past. How times have changed!)
According to National “Kids” Geographic, one of my favorite children’s journals, “the winter solstice marks the exact moment when half of Earth is tilted the farthest away from the sun. It usually happens on December 21 or 22, at the same second worldwide.”
My curiosity led me to explore the spiritual significance of the Winter Solstice. I discovered that it is a time that teaches us about resilience and hope in the face of darkness. It’s a powerful lesson that the sun always rises, even after the longest night, ushering in new beginnings and brighter days. This resilience, this ability to bounce back, is a part of our inner light, and it’s what fuels the perpetual cycle of growth and renewal.
Many have shared that times have appeared dark lately. I agree and disagree. Yes, we all will face trials, errors and peaks of darkness, but joy can still live through us during those times. When dark days come, focus on where you’re at, what you’ve experienced in the past, and how you made it over. Do not focus on the darkness, what’s currently being experienced. Know that darkness only comes at night, but joy comes in the morning. As educators, we have a unique role. When children/students arrive at school saddened, we pour joy into them to bring a smile, a chuckle, and a bit of laughter. That same joy we bring to children, bring it to yourself. Find ways to bring sunshine to cloudy days. Rainbows to storm clouds and rain and peace to stormy seas.
When you become aware of someone navigating a dark period in their life or even suspect that someone may be struggling, remember the profound impact of a simple act of kindness. A smile, a warm greeting, or a thoughtful gesture can be the beacon of light that guides them through their storm. When multiplied, these small acts of kindness have the power to transform the world.
I challenge you to wake up each morning, in the dark of the day, with gratitude. Embrace the mindset to bring a smile to someone’s face, and you’ll find that it not only brightens their day but also lifts your own spirits.
